Girls Farm Camp
Girls Farm was a two week-long summer camp designed for young women (15-18 yrs old) of Providence, which we held in the summers of 2016 and 2017. Every day for two weeks, campers gathered at our city garden and took the bus to Seekonk, where we spent the day doing farm work, preparing lunch with vegetables from the farm, and learning from each other and from the earth. Besides participating in all the activities of a working farm (harvesting, planting, weeding, caring for our pigs and chickens), campers had the opportunity to learn other skills that interest them such as herbal medicine and simple building. We had conversations about justice and care. We watered the seed of the radical nurturer in each of us.
The inaugural Girls Farm Camp in 2016 hosted 8 amazing teens and included art projects with natural media, a plant walk with an incredible ethno-botanist, a field trip to Movement Ground Farm, pickle making and lessons in food preservation, and mindful movement and reflection. Girls Farm Camp 2017 expanded to host 9 teens for two weeks. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with these young women, and we wish for them abundance and growth!
